With Diwali less than two weeks away, Indore is preparing for a surge of shoppers as police, the Indore Municipal Corporation and the district administration finalise arrangements for the city's busiest markets.

Officials have marked parking zones near Rajwada, Sarafa Bazaar and Mahatma Gandhi Road, and are deploying additional police personnel and home guards in crowded areas. Cleanliness teams will work extra shifts to keep the markets spotless in the evenings.

Lakhs of shoppers expected in the main markets

Traffic police say heavy vehicles will be restricted from the old city between 10 am and 10 pm, while two-wheelers and cars will be directed to designated parking lots. Shuttle e-rickshaws are planned between major parking areas and market entrances.

Fire department teams will remain on standby near narrow lanes and electrical installations, and traders have been asked to follow safety norms for lighting, decorations and firecracker stalls.

Officials said CCTV cameras and watch towers will monitor the crowd, and lost-and-found desks will operate at major entry points.

The administration's challenge is balancing festive business with safety and smooth movement. Narrow lanes and encroachments have worsened congestion in previous years, and traders have promised to keep pavements clear this season.

How shoppers can stay safe and save time

Officials are encouraging residents to shop in the morning, use public transport or shuttles where possible, use digital payments and keep emergency numbers handy.

The festive season is expected to be one of the busiest for Indore's retail sector this year, with traders hoping for strong sales across electronics, clothing, jewellery and sweets.
